Operation Gladio<\/strong> was the codename for clandestine “stay-behind<\/a>” operations of armed resistance that were organized by the Western Union<\/a> (WU) (founded in 1948), and subsequently by NATO<\/a> (formed in 1949) and by the CIA<\/a> (established in 1947),[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup> in collaboration with several European intelligence agencies<\/a> during the Cold War<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup> Although Gladio<\/em> specifically refers to the Italian branch of the NATO stay-behind<\/a> organizations, Operation Gladio<\/em> is used as an informal name for all of them. Stay-behind operations were prepared in many NATO member countries, and in some neutral countries.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to several Western European researchers, the operation involved the use of assassination, psychological warfare<\/a>, and false flag<\/a> operations to delegitimize left-wing<\/a> parties in Western European countries, and even went so far as to support anti-communist<\/a> militias and right-wing terrorism<\/a> as they tortured communists and assassinated them, such as Eduardo Mondlane<\/a> in 1969.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[8]<\/a><\/sup> The United States Department of State<\/a> rejected the view that they supported terrorists and maintains that the operation served only to resist a potential invasion of Western European countries by the Soviet Union<\/a>.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Operation Northwoods<\/strong> was a proposed false flag<\/a> operation that originated within the US Department of Defense<\/a> of the United States government<\/a> in 1962. The proposals called for CIA<\/a> operatives to both stage and commit acts of terrorism<\/a> against American military and civilian targets, blame them on the Cuban government<\/a>, and would be used to justify a war against Cuba. The possibilities detailed in the document included the remote control of civilian aircraft which would be secretly repainted as US Air Force planes,[2]<\/a><\/sup> a fabricated ‘shoot down’ of a US Air Force fighter aircraft off the coast of Cuba, the possible assassination of Cuban immigrants, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas,[3]<\/a><\/sup> blowing up a U.S. ship, and orchestrating terrorism in U.S. cities.[2]<\/a><\/sup> [4]<\/a><\/sup> The proposals were rejected by President John F. Kennedy<\/a>.[5]<\/a>[6]<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fidel Castro<\/a> had taken power in Cuba in 1959 and began allowing communists into the new Cuban government, nationalizing U.S. businesses and improving relations with the Soviet Union, arousing the concern of the U.S. military due to the Cold War<\/a>. The operation proposed creating public support for a war against Cuba by blaming the Cuban government for terrorist acts that would be perpetrated by the U.S. government.[1]<\/a><\/sup> To this end, Operation Northwoods proposals recommended hijackings and bombings<\/a> followed by the introduction of false evidence that would implicate the Cuban government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several other proposals were included within Operation Northwoods, including real or simulated actions against various U.S. military<\/a> and civilian targets. The operation recommended developing a “Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington”, which involved the bombing of civilian targets, which was to be blamed on the Cuban government to paint a false image of Fidel Castro and misinform the American public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan was drafted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, signed by Chairman Lyman Lemnitzer<\/a> and sent to the Secretary of Defense<\/a>. Although part of the US government’s anti-communist Cuban Project<\/a>, Operation Northwoods was never officially accepted; it was authorized by the Joint Chiefs of Staff<\/a>, but then rejected by President Kennedy. None of the false flag operations became active under the auspices of the Operation Northwoods proposals.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This fascinating new study shows how the CIA and the British secret service, in collaboration with the military alliance NATO and European military secret services, set up a network of clandestine anti-communist armies in Western Europe after World War II. These secret soldiers were trained on remote islands in the Mediterranean and in unorthodox warfare centers in England and in the United States by the Green Berets and SAS Special Forces. The network was armed with explosives, machine guns and high-tech communication equipment hidden in underground bunkers and secret arms caches in forests and mountain meadows. In some countries the secret army linked up with right-wing terrorist who in a secret war engaged in political manipulation, harassment of left wing parties, massacres, coup d’\u00e8tats and torture. Codenamed ‘Gladio’ (‘the sword’), the Italian secret army was exposed in 1990 by Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti to the Italian Senate, whereupon the press spoke of “The best kept, and most damaging, political-military secret since World War II” (Observer, 18. November 1990) and observed that “The story seems straight from the pages of a political thriller.” (The Times, November 19, 1990). Ever since, so-called ‘stay-behind’ armies of NATO have also been discovered in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, Greece and Turkey. They were internationally coordinated by the Pentagon and NATO and had their last known meeting in the NATO-linked Allied Clandestine Committee (ACC) in Brussels in October 1990.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
